VL - A4 - connotations on the typewriter
The typewriter has a rich history due to the advancements in technology and word processing that has lasted more than a century. Because of the advent of the personal computer and ink and laser printing, typewriters have become significantly devalued. However, they are still extraordinarily popular among the those nostalgic for the past and those who chose an alternative to technology.
Famous recent authors who preferred the typewriter over the computer are Hunter S. Thompson and David Sedaris. They follow in the footsteps of previous authors which include ee cummings, Ernest Hemingway, Jack Kerouac, and Tom Robbins. William S Burroughs, another famous author, believed that there was a machine he called the 'Soft Typewriter' which was writing our lives, and our books into existence. And, in the film adaptation of his novel, "Naked Lunch," his typewriter is a living, insect-like entity.
The typewriter has inherent physical properties and a unique relationship to the user. The distinct sound of the striking of inked hammers to paper, letters, words, and sentences straight from the writers mind and body flow through the machine. and directly into the tangible world.

Sam's sketch on my typewriter.

Question: What physical thing, condition or event could this object help produce? How could that engage in a dialectic based on the first postcard?
I see this image as representation of what occurs when the user of the typewriter produces an idea. Instead of just ink on paper creating a story, it's the intense drama visualized in a tangible reality.
more to come...

VL : A2 : Finals and processPDF
All means of creation were purely hand-made, both quilting and embroidery. Better photographs would greatly improve the quality of the image, something I will implement over the weekend.
Actual quilt size - 7.5' x 6' (approximate).
Actual embroidery size - 13" x 20" (approximate).

VL : P2 : rhetorical troupe matrix and inspiration

Upon completing this process, I looked towards using recognizable women in history, particularly art history such as the venus de milo, eugene delacroix's "Liberty Leading the People", and works by alphonse mucha. Sketches utilize synecdoche with these figures standing in for the idea of strength, nationalism, and women's place in democracy.

Other concurrent sketches were of creating bold messages through quilting, embroidery, and knitting. For centuries, women have shaped culture using these craft skills to make functional and art related objects. This type of object making is no longer just restricted to the older quilting circles. It has become visible in pop culture through stitch and bitch, etsy.com and knitta.

VL : Project 2 : Voter Demographic
WOMEN IN THEIR TWENTIES

1. What are some predominately shared values? (broadly in life, not politics)
They are independent free-thinkers, who believe strongly in women's rights, taking great pride in being proactive towards improving gender equality. They are concerned with issues relating to animal rights, and sustainable living.
2. What political policies/issues are particularly important to this demographic in this election? why?
-Energy and the environment to attain a more sustainable means of living.
-Women's rights to provide better job standards, the issue of a women's reproductive rights, and reducing domestic violence.
-Education to provide a better means of paying for their college education.
-Healthcare, because many people in their twenties don't have health insurance due to high premiums.
3. Are there any cultural references your demographic identifies with? what?
Strong support towards building a better community within their local area, the importance of the use of public transit.
4. What does their graphic landscape look like? (This is sometimes called a "visual audit")
NPR, Pitchfork Music, etsy.com, bicycle culture, bitch magazine, knitta
5. Including the AIGA document and other sources, what are the issues cited for this group not voting?
They do not like the candidates, they are more interested in third party candidates. They feel the issues they are concerned with could be given more attention.

MX : Project 2 : Audience

COFFEE/ESPRESSO DRINKERS
An activity experienced by the individual as part of an independent daily routine. Individual gains knowledge and pride of the process and the experience of making the coffee.
An activity experienced by the collective to center a social experience around, and dependent upon a reliance of convenience. When like-minded people within the industry collaborate, innovation grows. This occurs in places such as conferences open to the public to better the individual's drinking experience. Barista Jams are also held within coffee shop service industry workers to share information and sometimes friendly competition.

KNOTTS AND SCHULTE
INTERCONNECTION > CONTRIBUTION > COMMUNICATION > GRATIFICATION
The main priority of an individual's desire to join an "online community" is to gain interconnections with other users. In order to connect with the other users, individuals must contribute, whether it be informational or media content. This worthy contribution is a form of communication, one of the strongest aspects of "online interaction". However, one must communicate in order to contribute. Without communication, the bonds of individual connections would be lost. Following the contributions, gratification would develop. Pride in one's self and the community as a whole, will ultimately maintain stability.
The importance of online collaboration is very simple. Yes it does exist and there will always be room for it. Without it, people would lose that contribution of communication and interaction. And the internet as we know it (WEB2.0) would cease to exist.

VL : Semiotics : Gradients
The refined version.
I chose to depict the typewriter for its function as a tool for creating language. A focus driven towards not only the two-dimensional written language it produces, but also its relationship to the human hand, american sign language, ASC-II pictorial type art, and communicating language to the deaf through the teletypewriter.

MX : Project 1 : Sketches

1. Simple vertical structure allows the user to read the information in a very traditional manner. The aesthetic is clean and very organized, while the color palate directly related to the subject matter. The subscriber of this layout takes more time to preview the articles before further reading.

2. Again, I felt the vertical structure was important and particularly so in this sketch. This layout appeals more to the young professional on the go and allows more stories to exist with the use of less space (utilization of external links). Their busy lifestyle perhaps may be difficult to balance with keeping up the news on a daily basis. quick headlines allow for faster intake, and sort of a broader view.

3. My final sketch is a hybrid between the first and second. It utilizes expandable/collapsable sections when headlines are clicked upon. This is benefitial because it allows the user to quickly and scan the "closed" articles, and if they wish to view more, it opens automatically on the same page. This in turn provides a very quick read, and as we all know the internet is much more digestible in small, scan-able pieces; which, is very important to my audience.
ADDITIONS
add links to bulletin board space where users can comment on issues pertaining to the articles.
add links to user submitted content unassociated to the NYTIMES. an example of this could be flickr photo albums of local victory garden involements. schedules for community events such as food markets, fundraisers. et cetra.
